Angelic Visitation – Chapter 5

Journey on the Ancient Path – The Way of the Shepherd

Chapter 5 – Angelic Visitation

In this chapter, Mary, the mother of Jesus, has a visitation from an angel. Then, the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and she conceived. God, the creator of Adam and Eve, was able to supernaturally cause Mary, a virgin, to conceive Jesus, by the Spirit. Jesus was therefore God and man; ‘God with us’.

Thought Provoking Journey:

  • The Bible does not tell us anything about Mary’s mother or father. And, the Bible does not specifically state how Elizabeth and Mary are related. Because of their age difference, many scholars believe that Mary’s mother, and Elizabeth, were sisters. But, we will never really know unless some ancient manuscript is discovered which explains their relationship.
  • God can do the impossible and the miraculous; He will fulfill His word according to His plan and in His time.
  • Is it possible that Mary became pregnant during the Feast of Hannakuh, the Feast of Lights?
  • In Hebrew, Mary’s real name is Miriam.
  • The Hebrew word for ‘God with us’ is spelled Immanuel or Emmanuel, depending on the translation.
  • The story of the angel’s visit to Mary, and the birth of Yeshua (Jesus), is in the Bible in Luke 1:26-38, Luke 2:1-21 and Matthew Chapters 1 and 2.
  • The story of Elizabeth and Mary is in the Bible in Luke 1:39-56.
  • In Luke 3:23-38, the genealogy of Yeshua (Jesus) is listed through Mary’s lineage. Mary was apparently the daughter of Heli. Mary’s husband, Joseph, was the son of Jacob, as explained in Matthew 1:16. Luke shows that Yeshua was born 70 generations after Enoch. And, according to Luke, Yeshua was born 77 generations from Adam. The number seven represents perfection and the completion of God’s work. God rested on the seventh day after creation, because his work was finished and it was perfect. The number ten represents God’s order. There are ten commandments and God required a tenth of the increase as a tithe from the Israelites. This means the numbers 70 and 77 have spiritual meanings. The timing of Yeshua’s birth meant God’s work, to provide a Messiah, was perfectly in order and was perfectly complete
